How to Calculate Your Overtime Rate

Step 1: Calculate your basic hourly rate

Annual Salary ÷ 52 weeks ÷ Contract Hours = Hourly Rate

Example: £32,073 ÷ 52 ÷ 37.5 = £16.45/hour

Step 2: Apply the enhancement multiplier

Step 3: Multiply by hours worked

8 hours Sunday × £26.32 = £210.56 gross

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I get paid extra for working weekends?
Yes — Saturday is 30% extra, Sunday is 60% extra on top of your hourly rate. This applies to all hours worked during those days (midnight to midnight).
How much extra do I get for night shifts?
30% enhancement for any hours worked between 8pm and 6am. This applies every night, not just weekends.
Can enhancements stack (e.g., Saturday night)?
Yes — if you work Saturday night (8pm-6am), you get Saturday enhancement (30%) AND night enhancement (30%), so 1.30 × 1.30 = 1.69 total multiplier (69% extra).
Is overtime mandatory?
No — overtime is voluntary unless your contract specifically states otherwise. You cannot be forced to work beyond your contracted hours without your agreement.
When will I receive overtime payment?
Usually the month after you work it, provided you submit timesheets by the deadline (typically 5th-10th of the month). Late submissions may be delayed another month.
Does overtime count toward my pension?
Yes — all overtime and enhancements are pensionable income. You pay pension contributions on it, and it counts toward your final pension calculation.
What's the difference between overtime and bank work?
Overtime is extra hours for your employer with enhancements. Bank work is freelance shifts via NHS Professionals/agency with higher base rates but no enhancements and may not count for pension.
How much tax will I pay on overtime?
Overtime is taxed as normal income at your marginal rate (20%, 40%, or 45%). You'll also pay NI (8%/2%) and pension contributions. Expect to keep about 60-70% after deductions.
