About NHS Pay Calculator

What We Do

NHS Pay Calculator provides free, accurate calculators for NHS staff to understand their exact take-home pay, pension value, and entitlements under Agenda for Change terms and conditions.

We serve over 1.3 million NHS workers across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland — from Healthcare Assistants to Senior Managers — helping them understand their pay, plan their finances, and make informed decisions about their careers.

Our Mission

NHS pay calculations are complex. Between Income Tax, National Insurance, NHS Pension tiers, student loans, and regional supplements like London HCAS, understanding your actual take-home pay can be confusing.

Our mission is simple: make NHS pay transparent and easy to understand.

Why We Built This

Every year, thousands of NHS workers search for answers to questions like:

We built NHS Pay Calculator to answer these questions instantly, accurately, and completely free of charge.

How Our Calculators Work

Data Sources

All calculations are based on official public data from:

Calculation Methodology

Our calculators follow the standard UK payroll calculation order. For complete transparency, we've published our full methodology with links to all official sources:

Calculation Order:

  1. Gross Salary — Base pay band × spine point × FTE (if part-time)
  2. HCAS Supplement — London/fringe area supplement (England only)
  3. Pensionable Pay — Gross salary minus any salary sacrifice
  4. NHS Pension — Calculated using 2026/27 contribution tiers (5.2%–12.5%)
  5. Taxable Income — Gross minus pension contributions (pension is pre-tax)
  6. Income Tax — Using HMRC tax bands (3 bands England/Wales/NI, 6 bands Scotland)
  7. National Insurance — 8% up to £50,270, then 2% above
  8. Student Loan — 9% above threshold (6% for Postgraduate)
  9. Net Take Home — Gross minus all deductions

Client-Side Processing

Your data never leaves your device. All calculations run entirely in your web browser using JavaScript. We do not collect, store, or transmit any of your pay information.
